What does the Bible say about becoming a Christian?

Belief in Jesus as the Son of God and trusting in His sacrificial death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins is the foundation of becoming a Christian. The Bible provides a clear path for becoming a Christian, emphasizing faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, and a transformed life through God’s grace. Here are key points the Bible teaches about becoming a Christian:

1. Faith in Jesus Christ

John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Romans 10:9: "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

2. Repentance

A Call to Turn Away from Sin

Acts 3:19: "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."
Isaiah 55:7: "Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon."

God's Desire for Repentance

2 Peter 3:9: "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."
Ezekiel 18:32: "For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!"

The Necessity of Repentance for Forgiveness

Luke 13:3: "I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Repentance as a Change of Heart and Action

Matthew 3:8: "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."
2 Corinthians 7:10: "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death."

The Joy of Repentance

Luke 15:7: "I tell you that in the same way, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."
